Welcome to Pratyush Anil
Exploring the Wonders of Nature

About me and my project
Who am I
My name is Pratyush Anil, I am a student currently studying at AICS (Amsterdam International Community School).

This project is about Microgreens. My research question is 'What are the different mediums used for growing microgreens and what are their benefits?'

What are Microgreens?
Microgreens come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Generally beginners like me, tend to start with one type of seed. Myself and the digital community recommend to start with a few of the below mentioned seeds. Seeds to start growing microgreens:
Broccoli, Fenugreek, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Mustard, Chia , Sunflower, Buckwheat seeds. Just like the seeds, there are also different ways to grow microgreens. Coco coir, Soil and Water based medium are the most popular and easily attainable materials. I will be using these three mediums.

My process and planning
My initial thoughts and ideas:
When I first started, I created a few research ideas and topics. My two main ideas were:
Physics and Tennis
Microgreens

To get a deeper understanding of how I could pursue them further I brainstormed and came up with the below ideas:

Physics and Tennis:
(11th May)
My Personal Project : How can you play the perfect game of tennis?
Goal: Creating a playstyle of tennis that reduces the physical and mental strain of a tennis player.
Global context: Scientific and technical innovation- How humans use the understanding of scientific principles
What will I do in this: Tennis is a sport with lots of physical movements. A professional player will move across an 8m x 11m court, holding a raquet while hitting a ball at over 100 Km per hr.
With all this going on, the player will be required to play by the rules of the sport. There are over 13 official rules that are in play during a game, then a few rules that will be in play incase of special events.
So this sport will put pressure on the player physically and mentally, but how can one reduce that pressure, is my personal project.
People to ask:
Primary source-Coach
Secondary- Websites, videos
Things to look into:
Momentum transfer
Forces

Next I did the same for the Microgreens idea, which is as follows:
Microgreens:
12th June 2020
My Personal Project : What are Microgreens ?
Inquiry Question:
Different mediums used for growing microgreens and what are their benefits?

Goal:
The goal of this project is to:
Learn how to conduct investigation systematically and grow microgreens using 3 different mediums ( soil, non-soil medium (coco coir) , and water) at a time. Growing your own microgreens from seed to feed. Create awareness on how to grow healthy, nutrient packed edible plants (microgreens) at home in 5 to 10 days
Develop awareness of and interest in plants as food: Know what is in your food (No genetically modified organisms or pesticides used). Eat healthier greens which are free from countless toxins
Evaluate evidence both from my own crop and from online published materials. Create a analysis report (compare evidence from self grown crop and already existing results that are published online)
After doing this I had a few meetings with my Supervisor to finalize my Personal project and global context. At the end I chose to look into the global context of ‘Scientific and technical innovation’.
My research
I started my research from basics such as:
What are microgreens?
How are they grown?
What are the different mediums used in growing microgreens?
What seeds can be used in growing microgreens?
Benefits of microgreens
These questions helped me gain a better understanding of microgreens in general, and enabled me to create an inquiry question ¨ What are the different mediums used for growing microgreens and what are their benefits?¨ As this question ticked a lot of boxes for me, I decided to proceed with it.

Once I was able to figure out my research question I went on to research online through various different sources both on and offline.
Why I chose Microgreens
What interested me in my topic?
My interest comes from wanting to learn and improve in the subject of Biology. It has not always been my strong point, despite studying the subject since MYP3, and in MYP4. During this time I studied & did experiments on Process of Life (Relevance of Ecosystem, Relevance for plants, link with Photosynthesis, Important nutrients in our diet etc).
Why I pursued this topic?
When personal project came up, I took this opportunity to relate the topics I learnt in MYP 3 and MYP4 by physically growing microgreens. By creating these goals, I wanted to gain more knowledge in general on the plants and get a hands on experience of growing my own greens for my daily consumption in food such as salads/soups .
Previous experience with the topic
From Myp 3 - 5 I have studied Biology. Over the span of these years I developed a small interest towards the subject and have learnt about how the human body works, functions of plants and animals, photosynthesis, the reproductive system and many more concepts. In MYP4 I studied as well as did a few experiments on ‘Process of Life’ (Relevance of Ecosystem, Relevance for plants, linked it with Photosynthesis, Important nutrients in our diet etc).
How does it connect to my future?
This topic doesn't connect to my career path that I want to pursue in the future, but instead it connects to a skill that I want to further develop. This skill is gardening. Many members of my family have a small passion to grow and produce their own set of herbs and greens. Until I did my Personal Project, I had not been able to understand why they grow their own greens. From my Personal Project I was able to understand that microgreens are virtually free of fat and cholesterol, low in carbohydrates and sodium, contain only 8-38 calories per cup and depending on the variety, are packed with Vitamin A, C, E, and K.
Hence in the future I would like grow my own greens for my daily consumption.
